Health Fitness Guide

“Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe it can achieve” – W. Clement Stone

Like any learned skill, there are certain basics that must be mastered first. The very bedrock upon which all health and fitness achievement rests are thoughts. Everything man-made in the world or any action you’ve taken in the past all started with a thought. There is not one man-made object or goal that didn’t start as a thought in someone’s head that was then made into reality. Your toaster, your TV, your automobile, your desire for better health.

A single thought ultimately transformed into physical reality.

In order to achieve any health or fitness goal you must start with this basic concept; thoughts are things. Thoughts are the foundation upon which you build the framework for attainment of your goal. Every thought has a physical manifestation in our bodies; every thought produces physical substances called neuro-transmitting enzymes that have instant effects on how we feel and who we are at the cellular level.

Don’t believe me? Think of biting into a big, juicy lemon or think about fingernails slowly running down a chalk board and tell me you didn’t have an immediate, physical response.

Or how about a thought that changed the world?

Every day, thousands of times a day, all over the world people fly from destination to destination. It’s amazing that a person can step into a device that lifts them off the ground and flies through the air at great speed sometimes over great distances safely carrying them to their destination in a matter of minutes or hours! Only a bit over a hundred years ago that would have been considered impossible or a miracle. Yet it happens every day today and it started with a thought in someone’s head that man could fly. On December 17th, 1903 the thought that man had had for generations to fly, became reality.

That is the power of thoughts!

If you can have that kind of immediate response from such a simple thought, just imagine what you can accomplish with a focused, burning desire backed by faith and persistence!

Life isn’t fair or normal, there’s just life. But that should be a comforting thought. If life were fair all things would be equal and all people would be equal. The logical conclusion is that there could be no social movement up or down, no bettering of yourself nor worsening, no getting healthier, just stagnation. Because life isn’t fair it means you have the ability to control whether you improve your life or make it worse but at least you have the ability to make change.

What about external influences which you have no control over? Say your significant other is killed in a car accident or you become paraplegic in a skiing accident. The list could go on and on. But there is one thing you have total control over.

Viktor E. Frankl, a concentration camp survivor, put it best in his book “Man’s Search for Meaning,”

“The one thing you can’t take away from me is the way I choose to respond to what you do to me. The last of one’s freedoms is to choose ones attitudes in any given circumstance.”

The only absolute freedom you have is choosing how you react to life. And how you choose starts with a thought.

Who you are right now is the sum total of what you’ve thought about up to this moment. If you’re not satisfied with who you are right now, the good news is who you will be from now on is entirely up to you. Change your thoughts and you can start changing yourself. If you want to lose weight or be more fit, it all starts with a thought.

Gym Membership or Workout at Home?

By Phillip Tucker

Pros and cons to each one of these, and in the end it all depends on what your goals are. I find that examining the challenges that each present for long term commitment is a better way to figure out which is right for you, since the goal is to create a new lifestyle, a habit, and anything that impedes that formation should be carefully considered or avoided. In the end, what you need to decide is which of these two you can best commit to, which one will heighten the odds of your continuously working out, and let that be the deciding factor.

First, quick rundown of the benefits provided by a gym. A wide array of expensive equipment and free weights. Professional staff that can assist you or provide personal trainers or cardio classes if you are so inclined. The opportunity to people watch while you are working out. A monetary commitment that may induce you to keep going so as to not have wasted your money.

The cons are subtle, but powerful. You have to drive there, and often that very commute can be enough over time to dissuade you from going. Sometimes the ambience is annoying, due to either a kind of crowd that can be off-putting , annoying music, incompetent staff, or unwanted attention from others when you’re trying to focus on your workout. Gyms can get crowded during peak hours, making it frustrating to work out when all the weights or machines are taken. The time added to your total workout time by the commute can make fitting the gym workout into your schedule an onerous task. Being watched by others while trying to get in shape can be awkward, especially if you’re not comfortable with your body. Finally, and strangely enough, the sheer variety of machines and workout options can be overwhelming.

The pros of working out at home are obvious. First, you can work out whenever you like, cutting out time spent driven in the car and making your schedule much more flexible. You are working out in private, and thus need not worry about unwanted attention, whether due to your being attractive and bothered by others, or not considering yourself attractive and being embarrassed about being watched. You need never wait to use your own weights. The convenience of being at home allows you to shower in your own bathroom, to make a recovery shake in your own kitchen right when you want it, and to play your own music at any volume out loud and not over earphones.

The cons, however, can be insidious. Nothing is easier to resist than a home work out when you are exhausted or not in the mood. There can be a lack of drive due to being in your own home that makes sticking to a home work out a challenge, given how easy it is to instead opt to watch TV or stay in bed in the mornings. You have to purchase your own home equipment, whether that be home fitness DVD’s or free weights. Maybe you have no space at home to put a small gym in. You have to provide your own stimulation to workout, since there is no monetary commitment or role models working out around you to inspire you. Finally, it can be lonely to work out alone without people about you to watch or converse with.

Which is best? Clearly it depends on your personal style. If a gym membership can cost $40/month, than a year’s worth of payments can amount to almost $500, which is more than enough to deck out your own home gym. If you are a social person who enjoys watching fit people workout, being alone in a home gym might be boring. If you are overweight and very self conscious, learning how to work out in front of regular gym goers might be awkward. What you need to do is be honest with your own goals, decide how committed you are, and see which set of pros and cons fit you best. Remember: the goal is to be able to commit to a lifestyle change, to adopt a new habit that will prove to more than 3 week fad. Thus be honest with yourself, and when you decide to commit, make that commitment as sincere as you can.

Picking the Best Abdominal Workout For You

By Roberto Sedycias

When people want to lose weight around their stomach, the first thing they think about is finding an appropriate abdominal workout to suit their style. There are many to choose from and you can pick either one or two or even a couple to incorporate into an exercise routine. When you are looking for a workout for your Abs, pick one that you will likely have more luck sticking to, and even one that you enjoy, to keep your success rate high.

An often overlooked AB workout that is simple and easy is the basic sit-up. It may seem old fashion but it has been tried and tested and it works! For the proper way to position yourself into the sit-up you need to begin on your back and have your feet firmly positioned on the floor. Lift up your knees while keeping your feet on the floor. Cross your fingers together and rest them behind your head, you will provide support to your head using your hands. Keep your elbows in and your head straight.

When you are ready, raise your head until you reach a thirty degree angle. When you do reach that point, stop and pause, at this point you can count to five or ten and then release slowly and lower yourself back down. For beginners a nice number to try is two sets of 8-12. For Intermediate you can try two sets of 8-12 and for the more advanced workout it is best to do two sets of 15-20. The simplicity of the common sit-up is so easy that it might fit well into your daily routine, it also costs nothing and once you get used to it, it is not too hard to do. The long term benefits will be more defined Abs and a smaller waistline.

If you`re searching for a more advanced abdominal workout, then you can try the abdominal crunch. For this activity you will want to get into a similar position as the basic sit-up, the only exception is that your feet are up on a right angle and your shoulders stay off the ground. This workout is intense because you`re always keeping your Abs moving so there is no break for them. To begin the exercise your elbows will push forward and touch your knee caps, they will touch, hold and then release slowly. This workout is also free and can fit into your routine, it is however, more intense than the regular sit-up.

Many people bring machines into their fitness world. There is the AB roller which is quite common and has been around for years. You lay down into the machine, move your arms up, rest your elbows on the pads and roll forward. Your workout is based on the slow rolling movements you do and the slow release position as you roll the machine back down. For beginners you can try doing two sets of 10-12. Intermediate can try three sets of 12-15 and for advanced people, you can attempt three sets of 15-20.

You can also try an AB weight machine at a gym. This is where you sit on a seat and place your arms and elbows on the sides. You will use your arms to pull down the machine and pull it forward. The weights you choose can vary and you can build up resistance and change the weight as needed. When you find the abdominal workout that works best for you, your stomach will show you the fruit of your labour!
