How Hard is the Insanity Workout?

What does ‘Extreme’ mean, anyway? Is calling the Insanity Workout ‘the hardest workout ever put on DVD’ meant as a warning, a challenge, or it is just hype? Why is the Insanity Workout considered such a challenge, and why are so many people warned away from trying it out? Is it meant only for the elite athlete, or can the Average Joe who used to be into sports during school but has since packed on 35 lbs try it on for size?

The Insanity Workout is billed as the most extreme workout put on DVD for a simple reason. While it’s only a two month workout, it’s done six days/week, with each workout lasting just shy of any hour. It consists of a brutal combination of cardio, plyometrics (jumping), calisthenics (using your own body weight as resistance), sports drills and core work. That, and the intensity level at which Insanity is does is through the roof. Shaun T calls it ‘Max Interval Training’, where instead of working out at max intensity for a brief period of time, and then resting for a long stretch, you do the opposite. The result is a heart pounding 45 minutes of extremely intense exercises.

The workout is designed for competent athletes for a reason. It’s not a question of willpower, not a question of determination, or even mental fortitude, though you’ll need all of those. It’s a question of how conditioned your joints and muscles are. Whether they’re ready to be pounded six days/week, for two months straight. The most common complaint I hear is from people two weeks in who have started to develop knee and ankle injuries. These can be ameliorated by taking three basic precautions: 1) Get the best cross trainers you can buy, 2) Work out on a yoga mat, and 3) Take a joint support supplement composed of collagen type II and glucosamine. Even so, your body will taking a rude pounding, and may not be up to the task.

Is it worth it? Is it worth pounding your body so hard for two months? Yes. What you end up doing is not High Intensity Interval Training, but Threshold Training, where you operate at just below your all out max so that you can last all 45 minutes. This results in a staggering number of bodily adaptions, from developing your anaerobic engine to improving your explosive power (think your ability to jump or explode into a sprint). It consumes a vast number of calories (up to 1,000 in some workouts) and so if you follow the nutrition plan correctly, can result in a staggering weight loss. Your muscles and core will become jacked, and all the calisthenics (thin a wide variety of pushups, tricep/shoulder work) will keep your upper body toned and in excellent shape.

So what’s the take-away. Can you do Insanity if you’re not a super-fit athlete? Yes, if you remain aware of your joints, take it slow in the beginning, and give your body time to adapt. Will it give you stunning results if you follow the nutrition plan and do your best? Absolutely. Will fit and healthy athletes get something out of this program? No question about it. I’ve heard of entire SWAT and police forces using this program to get in shape, highschool basketball coaches using it over the summer to condition their teams, and have heard innumerable success stories from a wide variety of people that tell me one thing: Insanity is for real. If you’re smart about how you approach it, if you take care of yourself, follow the nutrition plan and have a will of iron, you’ll get it done, and you won’t recognize yourself when you’re finished.

Choose a Chest Workout

Of all of the differing types of muscles of the body that are worked out constantly, the chest possibly gets more attention than any other. That’s why most men will go looking for a chest workout which will actually help them to build up this area of the body quickly. Although there are some that are reasonably well known, there also are some workouts which will help to hit these muscles from different areas and can be very effective at helping you to beat sticking points. Here are some different chest workout routines for you to make a choice from.

The most elementary chest workout would consist of the bench press, either with a barbell or with dumbbells. Depending on your experience and the period of time that you have been doing the bench press, you will have hit a point which is rather sticky and you are having a difficult time getting beyond the weight that you are lifting. One of the tactics for you to be in a position to get beyond the stumbling block is to use isometric exercises or to make sure that you’re working the negative efficiently. If you realize that you are stuck at one particular location during your bench press, simply hold the weight there with a spot for so long as you can. Though it is vital to make sure that you are resting effectively and giving your body the correct time to recuperate, it could be possible for you to get stronger by doing some push-ups in between your real workout session. Body weight exercises are a brilliant way for you to get stronger and this could go a long way in helping you to move more weight when you are at the gym.

One last chest workout that you may want to think about is to get away from the bench press for a while and do some machine workouts to bolster your chest from other areas. Working on the pectoral muscles and perhaps doing some dumbbell workouts using multi-joint exercises are excellent tactics for you to add strength. Your body would also potentially benefit from a tiny bit of rest if you have a tendency to do bench presses every time you’re at the gymnasium. It could be a little bit difficult for you to walk away from your usual way of exercising but the advantages that you will receive by allowing your body to recuperate will be worthwhile in the end.

There are so many different types of chest workouts that can be done that it can be difficult to select one that works the best for you. Simply mix things up on a regular basis and you’ll recognize expansion, both in your strength and in the size of your chest muscles rapidly.

Why do so many people fail to achieve their fitness goals? First of all, they don’t have a plan for how to get started, and how they intend to accomplish those targets. It’s not entirely their fault, actually.

There is no better workout to stay in shape than running. Long before weights, fitness equipment and home gyms were invented, the way human beings kept fit was simply running.

When you begin to jog outdoors, you will find yourself anticipating your workout throughout the day; this will likely cause you to achieve your results much faster. Before you hit the trails, however, make sure you know the area you will be running in, especially if it’s wooded. Many runners have gotten lost because of a failure to simply acquaint themselves with the trail and the area they will be jogging in.

Come prepared for bad weather. If a sudden rainstorm or even snowstorm hits in the middle of your workout, simply brining a few extra layers of clothing will make a big difference.

The bottom line is, when you are first ready to embark on an exercise program, there is nothing better for your body than running. Jogging outdoors can be a great motivator to get you through the day and actually help you to accomplish your fitness goals much fester. The most important thing is to get started on your diet fitness program today.

All too many people set goals for getting fit, but fail to achieve them. When the time actually comes to take action, they put it off until tomorrow. Tomorrow becomes the next day, and the next, and so on.

Pretty soon, they decide just to forget it completely. When you make your workouts fun and enjoyable, the drudgery will be gone and you will find that getting started (and finishing) your workout is no problem at all.

Cybex Arc Trainer vs Elliptical Trainers

Cybex Arc Trainers are a great piece of fitness equipment. The development of the elliptical trainer has transformed the fitness centers and gyms across the country. The ability to do a full body workout with little or no impact allows you to burn more calories by exercising a larger group of muscles on your body. Elliptical trainers are in many cases replacing treadmills in local gyms and YMCA’s. When elliptical trainers first appeared the feel of using this new piece of fitness equipment was compared to running on air. However some users had trouble using the new cross trainers. Its flywheel is located at the front of the arc trainer just like the older Cybex elliptical trainers. The location of the pedals appears to be located slightly further to the rear of the arc trainer then you would find on many elliptical trainers. Upon mounting the arc trainer you almost immediately find that you are standing in a more upright position. As you begin to make your stride you will feel your hips doing more of the work. Most people find that using the Cybex Arc Trainer is slightly more comfortable then using some elliptical trainers. The incline feature of the Cybex Arc Trainer is really nice and easy to use. A thirty minute workout provides essentially the same workout as a top quality elliptical trainer with adjustable incline features. It appears to work all the same muscle groups that an elliptical trainer impact. The Cybex Arc Trainer handle bars work in the same motion as your feet do. Basically as the left foot goes forward so does the left handle bar in a very natural cross country skiing motion.

Cybex Arc Trainers are built to last and have lots of features that make them a premier piece of fitness equipment. The console is nicely setup and it has up to 12 exercise routines with varying resistance levels similar to many quality elliptical trainers. The biggest drawback to the Cybex Arc Trainer is the price. For the average fitness enthusiast it would be a major investment to purchase a Cybex Arc Trainer for in home use. A quality elliptical trainer provides the same exercise benefits as the Cybex Arc Trainer at less that half the price. If you really want to use the Cybex Arc Trainer as part of your exercise program we suggest you look for a fitness center that already has them.
